PILE ON!

Just because you own a 4x4 doesn't mean your beyond the hazards of snow and ice, you still need to be able to drive, as proved in this hilarious video filmed in the city of Spokane in Washington.

Calgary Teddy Toss 2010

The Calgary Hitman this year have again kept up with an annual tradition where the fans toss teddy bears onto the ice so that the players can then later deliver them to a selected charity.
This year the lucky recipient was Alberta's Children's hospital, with the players all visiting the hospital the day after the game to deliver the toys.
Fans bring the teddys to the game and as soon as the first goal is scored they launch them onto the ice.

SIN REPRESAS!

Chilean Patagonia is under attack by an international energy company that plans to build five massive (unnecessary other than to make them money) hydroelectric dams on the Pasqua and Baker rivers.
The dams would down large swaths of wild land, industrialize a pastoral region with growing potential for eco-tourism and require the clear-cutting of native forest to accommodate 1,500 miles of transmission lines.

There's a whole lot more exploitation going on in Chile and it's land and people need a voice to raise awareness and help protect their country.

Those Were The Days

From the early days of home made catapults and jumps to Jackass 3D, this venture is a real treat. As ever some of the simplest stunts are the best but captured in slow motion, high definition and 3D really lets you revel in the moment.

The guys are obviously getting on compared to those early days and it was cool to see a memory packed montage to end the film. They've clearly had an epic journey,

Thanks Jackass

P.S. Gotta try the barrel surfing

Contaminación Acústica

Going down a storm on Soundcloud and soon to be gracing the airwaves of online radio station fnoob.com

Below are a few designs I've done for this latest enterprise.

Gaia

I have long been inspired by the exceptional work of James Lovelock an independent scientist living in Devon. He has been the forerunner of countless scientific discoveries and while still not accepted by many people his theory of Gaia is quite simply Genius.

I've tried explaining this theory to many people in the past with little success or an unsatisfactory response ( I was quite literally blown away when I first investigated and importantly understood Gaia theory) So I've posted a few introductory videos to help explain the theory.

In short Gaia theory states that the living and non-living components of the earth form a complex interacting system that can be thought of as a single organism. This biosphere regulates the Earth's environment and so maintains the extraordinary and unique conditions for life over billions of years.

FUERZA CHILE!

Save The Waves Coalition has teamed up with designer Fletcher Chouinard to release a new benefit T-shirt to support Save The Waves Coalition’s ongoing earthquake and tsunami relief work through reconstruction of homes, cultivation of educational organic gardens, beach cleanups and cash grants for Chilean student leaders.

Chile was struck by a massive earthquake and tsunami on February 27, 2010, and Save The Waves has been conducting a grassroots relief campaign in coastal Chile since then.

Best Documentary Tonight on More4 10pm

You may well have heard of a film rippling the surface a few months ago in the run up to and after the Oscars. It won an Oscar for Best Documentary after numerous other awards and with very good reason. It is an awesome film that leaves no stone uncovered in it's investigation into the exploitation of cetaceans around the world. For me the film goes far deeper than these issues, it left me ultimately with a euphoric feeling to see like minded individuals coming together to try and make people sit up, look and think further.

The Documentary is on More4 Tonight at 10pm

Plastiki Sailing Expedition

The Plastiki is a unique, one-of-a-kind 60-foot (20m) catamaran made out of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and other recycled PET plastic and waste products. The craft was built using cradle to cradle design philosophies and features many renewable energy systems, including solar panels, wind and trailing propeller turbines, and bicycle generators.
On March 20, 2010, the sailing vessel set off from San Francisco, California with a six-man crew, including David de Rothschild, to sail across the Pacific Ocean. The expedition plans to make landfall in Sydney, Australia after visiting several sites of ecological importance or which are susceptible to environmental issues caused by global warming, for instance the current sea level rise, ocean acidification and marine pollution.
The crew is skippered by prominent British ocean sailor Jo Royle, and will carry up to six artists, adventurers and scientists at any one stage of the journey. The crew from San Francisco to Sydney consists of Co-skipper David Thompson, expedition diver Olav Heyerdahl, filmmakers Max Jourdan and Vern Moen, and expedition leader David de Rothschild.

Glassy Summer's Day

Already hot from the morning sun and gradually getting hotter, we were gasping to get into the water, waves or not. Just to make sure though the rash vests were donned to give ourselves a good toasting before a refreshing plunge into the sea.

An all day session with some great little clean waves was enjoyed and very much appreciated.

AWESOME

Four Clans, Tsimshian

The Tsimshian (English pronunciation: Sim-She-an) are an indigenous people of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Tsimshian translates to Inside the Skeena River. The Skeena River is the second largest river entirely in BC. The river and its basin sustain a wide variety of fish, wildlife, vegetation and communities native to the area. For hundreds of years these communities have lived comfortably within the resources of the river.

Like all Northwest Coastal peoples, they thrived on the abundant sea life, especially salmon as they swam up river to spawn each year.

The Tsimshian consists of four clans;

- Laxsgiik ( Eagle Clan)
- Gispwudwada (Killerwhale Clan)
- Ganhada (Raven Clan)
- Laxgibuu ( Wolf Clan)

Tofino Time

At the end of the track on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island lies the small town of Tofino.

A very laid back town set in a stunningly beautiful and wild environment of steep mountains rising from seas rich with life, inlets, dotted islands, huge redwood cedar tress crammed up to the shoreline and all lit up by a constant changing light show as weather sweeps in off the Pacific. For us we were blessed with sunny days and wild seas. Early morning beach walks (surf checks) were invigorating and at times wild as ocean born storms swept passed the exposed coastline.

The local people obviously have the same passion for this land as we were enjoying and developing during our stay, and this shows in their manner and work. There were many small businesses in the town selling and exhibiting a wide range of local products, crafts and art. Rather than the usual cheap tat you find in many 'giftshops' there were many items of interest, including hand carved traditional cedar wood boxes and local clothing designs, artwork and t-shirts courtesy of Project Monster Studios.

These two images (left) are paintings done by Julie Robinson, and are some of my favorites from her collection that we viewed at Project Monster. If your not popping to Tofino anytime soon then check out her work at http://www.projectmonster.ca/

The image below is titled 'Surfers Delight' and has been created by the Canadian artist Roy Henry Vickers.
Descended from three northwest coast First Nations, Roy studied traditional First Nations art and design at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art in Hazelton, and over the years being heavily influenced by Vancouver Island and specifically the area of Tofino he developed his distinctive style. Born For This

Having watched The Cove a couple of months ago I was inspired to take up some of the designs I had begun a few years ago. This poster was taking another angle but with the recent and tragic death of Dawn Brancheau I wanted to highlight the problem of cetaceans in captivity.

Cetaceans are wild, intelligent creatures, born with natural instincts and behaviours, designed for a life swimming hundreds of miles free in the open ocean. When these magnificent creatures are confined to captivity in an area equivalent to what a bathtub would be to us and asked to carry out repetitive tricks for food year after year, can we really be surprised when there's a burst of erratic, agitated behaviour.

Our thoughts go out to Dawn's family and friends.

Keep Britain Farming

No Cows, No Countryside

The unique and magnificent British Landscape has evolved after centuries of farming and land management. Our patchwork of fields, moors, woodlands, lanes and common land is stitched together by 'living fences' of hedgerows, banks and stone walls - all a direct product of farming's management of the countryside. Farming provides an essential bulwark against the relentless encroachment of urban developments. Yet, with just 18 per cent of us choosing or able to buy British-produced food, thousands of farms and livelihoods have been lost and our unique landscape endangered.

Arctic Britain

A return to the norm but thanks for the snow - We've been blessed with a sustained period of snow on which to ride, slide, photograph and enjoy. Getting up this morning to the usual grey, rainy landscape was a disappointment but before the Great Thaw takes hold have a look at this amazing photo of 'Arctic Britain Jan 2010' as seen from space.

Stealth Mission

A few photos taken last night between rides at the local piste. Beautiful, still, quiet, and super cold evening. Awesome backdrop to some quality powder runs.

Undeck The Halls

Not quite as fun as putting up and decorating the Christmas tree but taking down the tree on 12th night doesn't have to be the end.

- Chop the tree into firewood and kindling - A standard Noble Fir can be turned into more than 13 pounds of firewood to keep you warm in the winter months. Take care when burning this type of wood as it contains a large amount of sap, that can spit.

- Grind the tree and use as mulch in gardens, trails or in animal stalls.

- If sunk into lakes and ponds Christmas trees provide great refuge and nutrients for fish. You must obviously seek permission first.

- Christmas trees make effective errosion barriers on beaches, streambeds and lakes. Sunk into the sand the trees help to bind the sand and provide a firm base from where plants can take hold and further reinforce the ground.

- Pack the needles into small sacks, place behind radiators to keep that fresh pine smell wafting around the house.

The average Christmas tree takes an average of 8 years to grow from a sapling which is itself 3 years old.

During this time, they replenish the air with oxygen. Just one acre of Christmas trees produces enough oxygen to support eighteen people.

Tree farms provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Due to their hardiness, Christmas trees are often planted where few other plants grow, thereby increasing soil stability.

For each Christmas tree cut on tree farms, 2 or 3 new seedlings are planted.
