Dragon's Den illustrates the importance of graphic design

I just watched Dragon's Den (Episode 4, Series 9, 39 minutes in, http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b013ytch) and It was a shame to see the lady from Rico's Mexican Kitchen loosing out on investment due to a weak brand identity. Everything else about her pitch and product range was spot on but unfortunately the brand wasn't strong enough especially with the projections in mind.

It did however serve as a prime example of how important and thus how much a well designed brand identity/logo is worth to any business.

First impressions are everything and even if your product/business is amazing you may find customers consciously and subconsciously bypassing you in favour of a better looking design and product/business.

Got a tad carried away on this tonight - It's a quality new game developed by Playdead and it oozes Graphic quality with a very dark and atmospheric draw.

Cunning as a Fox

A cunning fox has shot its would be killer in Belarus by pulling the trigger of the hunter's gun as the pair scuffled after the man tried to finish the animal off with the butt of his gun.

The hunter ended up in hospital with a leg wound while the fox made its escape.

The story reminds me of the fisherman who while reeling in a Marlin was speared in the chest as the fish leaped from the water onto his boat and then escaping back into the sea.

SIN REPRESAS!

Chilean Patagonia is under attack by an international energy company that plans to build five massive (unnecessary other than to make them money) hydroelectric dams on the Pasqua and Baker rivers.
The dams would down large swaths of wild land, industrialize a pastoral region with growing potential for eco-tourism and require the clear-cutting of native forest to accommodate 1,500 miles of transmission lines.

There's a whole lot more exploitation going on in Chile and it's land and people need a voice to raise awareness and help protect their country.

FUERZA CHILE!

Save The Waves Coalition has teamed up with designer Fletcher Chouinard to release a new benefit T-shirt to support Save The Waves Coalition’s ongoing earthquake and tsunami relief work through reconstruction of homes, cultivation of educational organic gardens, beach cleanups and cash grants for Chilean student leaders.


Chile was struck by a massive earthquake and tsunami on February 27, 2010, and Save The Waves has been conducting a grassroots relief campaign in coastal Chile since then.

Tofino Time

At the end of the track on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island lies the small town of Tofino.

A very laid back town set in a stunningly beautiful and wild environment of steep mountains rising from seas rich with life, inlets, dotted islands, huge redwood cedar tress crammed up to the shoreline and all lit up by a constant changing light show as weather sweeps in off the Pacific. For us we were blessed with sunny days and wild seas. Early morning beach walks (surf checks) were invigorating and at times wild as ocean born storms swept passed the exposed coastline.

The local people obviously have the same passion for this land as we were enjoying and developing during our stay, and this shows in their manner and work. There were many small businesses in the town selling and exhibiting a wide range of local products, crafts and art. Rather than the usual cheap tat you find in many 'giftshops' there were many items of interest, including hand carved traditional cedar wood boxes and local clothing designs, artwork and t-shirts courtesy of Project Monster Studios.

The image below is titled 'Surfers Delight' and has been created by the Canadian artist Roy Henry Vickers.

Descended from three northwest coast First Nations, Roy studied traditional First Nations art and design at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art in Hazelton, and over the years being heavily influenced by Vancouver Island and specifically the area of Tofino he developed his distinctive style. Keep Britain Farming

No Cows, No Countryside

The unique and magnificent British Landscape has evolved after centuries of farming and land management. Our patchwork of fields, moors, woodlands, lanes and common land is stitched together by 'living fences' of hedgerows, banks and stone walls - all a direct product of farming's management of the countryside. Farming provides an essential bulwark against the relentless encroachment of urban developments. Yet, with just 18 per cent of us choosing or able to buy British-produced food, thousands of farms and livelihoods have been lost and our unique landscape endangered.
